Posturographic study in older patients with instability associated with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: a prospective analysis

Background and aims. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is the most frequent type of peripheral vertigo. The characteristic vertiginous symptoms with head movements are not always present but can often be described as persistent instability lasting weeks or months. It more common in elderly patients, significantly restricting their ability to perform everyday activities. We aimed assess factors related a greater propensity such instability. Methods. A prospective observational study was conducted on cohort 50 patients benign comprised two groups: older younger than 70 years. Questionnaires for dizziness (Dizziness Handicap Inventory) risk falls (falls efficacy scale) were administered both groups, dynamic posturography upon diagnosis once resolved. Results. In group, mean age 51.5 years (56.7% women). Regarding subjective assessment, questionnaires improved (p < 0.001). objective values assessed by posturographic analysis after treatment. Conversely, group aged 77.4 average (68.8% only scale = 0.015), marginally that no significant improvement. Conclusions. using could play role assessment residual will allow implementation targeted treatment patients.
